dental school (school of dental surgeryschool of dentistrydental faculty) is a tertiary educational institution—or part of such an institution—that teaches dental medicine and surgery to prospective dentists. Upon successful completion after 6 years, the graduate receives a degree in Dentistry, Dental Surgery which, depending on the school, graduates might be awarded a  BDS or BCh.D which means bachelor’s degree in Dentistry & Dental surgery.

The first generation dental schools in Nigeria are situated in the southern part of the country LAGOS, IBADAN, IFE, BENIN

LAGOS- The first dental school in Nigeria is the School of Dentistry, College of Medicine University of Lagos, Idi-Araba, Lagos established in 1964.  It is the oldest Dental School in Nigeria, West Africa and it is believed to be the first Dental school to be established in Sub-Saharan Africa by Black Africans.  Read more about the school here

 IBADAN– The University of Ibadan was established in 1975 with the aim of producing highly skilled dental surgeons comparable to those in the developed countries.  Read more about the school here

ILE-IFE – Established in 1975, the Obafemi Awolowo University Dental School is the third oldest dental school which has produced dental surgeons for over four decades attending to oral health needs of the country. Read more about the school here

BENIN  University of Benin Dental school was the only one in the south-southern part of the country for many years until recently. Read more about the school here

They trained a lot of great dental surgeons in about 40 years and the teaching hospitals attached to these schools rendered fantastic dental care for Nigerians for years.

MAIDUGURI- In order to further spread the tentacles of the great profession to the northern part of the country, There was establishment of new dental school at the University of Maiduguri– Read more about the school here

ENUGU– The dental school of University of Nigeria is located at Enugu. In 1983, the Federal School of Dental Technology and Therapy (FSDTT) was established in Trans -Ekulu, Enugu state and the school has produced thousands of dental therapists and dental technologists for the nation. In 1991, pioneer Dental Surgeons were produced but presently the dental school has only partial accreditation  by MDCN/ NUC. Read more about the school here

PORT-HARCOURTUniversity of Port Harcourt dental school  which is second of its kind in the zone has graduated about 3 sets of dentists as well.  Read more about the school here

LAGOS Lagos State College of Medicine (LASUCOM) is the first and the only dental school established by a state government in Nigeria. They have just inducted the pioneer set of the school recently too. Read more about the school here

  2. I know Dental schools at Jos, kano and calabar are the newest dental schools in Nigeria according to MDCN.
    The rate at which more schools are emerging in Nigeria is really encouraging and one can only wish the number keeps increasing.
